According to Consumer Affairs Victoria, ‘smoke alarms must be equipped in all Victorian houses, units, flats and townhouses. Rental providers must set up smoke alarms in rental properties.’
Depending on your property, the type of smoke alarm differs. All buildings built after 1 August 1997 must have hard-wired smoke alarms with a battery back-up. Buildings built before that date can have a battery-powered smoke alarm.
